Entry 1_Trần Thị Huyền Trang

Entry 1

Item 1
The two roosters and the eagle

Two roosters were fighting by a heap of dung. One rooster was stronger than the other. He fought the other rooster and drove him away from the dung. The hens crowded round the rooster and praised him.

The rooster wanted everyone in the neighbor to hear of his strength and prowess. So he flew up onto the shed, flapped his wings and cried out:
-"Look at me, everyone. I beat a rooster! There is no other rooster in the world as strong as me."
At the moment, an eagle flew up, knocked the rooster down, dug his claws into him and carried him off to his nest.

Rhetorical devices
Metaphor:
- The rooster is implied as a person who is very arrogant. He considered himself the best and look down on everybody else.
- The eagle is considered the better one who can defeat the arrogant person

Message
Diamond cut diamond. Nobody is the best in the world. It is simply because there will always be someone who is better.

Item 2
The mouse, the cat and the rooster
A little mouse went into the yard. She walked around and then went back to her mother.
-"Oh, mother, i saw two animals. One is frightening, the other nice.''
-"Tell me what the animals were like" said the mother.
-"The frightening one was strutting about the yard'' said the mouse. "He had black legs, a red comb, goggled eyes and a hooked nose. When i passed, he opened his beak, raised his foot and began to shout so loudly that he scared me stiff"
-"That's the rooster", said the old mouse. "He never does anyone any harm. Don't be afraid of him. But what about the other animal?"
-"The other one was basking in the sun. He had white neck and smooth grey feet. He licked his white chest and waved his tail gently as he looked at me."
-"You are so silly!" said the mouse. "That was the cat!"

Rhetorical devices
Metaphor:
- The mouse is the young people who are inexperienced and judged everything by appearance, by what were showed up.
- The cat is considered the people who appears to treat others well but, in fact, intends to harm them

Message
Do not judge a man by his looks. The way people treat you or behave to you does not say all their feelings to you. There will be someone who pretend to be nice to you but actually want to harm you.

Item 3
Cartoon

Rhetorical devices
Rhetorical question: Is tobacco a friend of human? Where will it lead us to?
Irony: The smoker was so enjoyable holding the tobacco's hand and let it lead his way. But the way is to the abyss.
Message
Smokers think tobacco is their friend, but actually it ruins their health and lead them to death.

  1. dear trang,
after reading your entry, i have some following comments for you:
firstly, all your items meet the entry's requirements as they include the story/picture, rhetorical devices as well as messages.

    about the items:

    1. item 1: your story is quite short and easy to follow. it has a deep meaning which criticizes a negative attitude of people: over-selfconfidence (with the mentaphor of the rooster).
    however, i think it's a bit predictable.

    2. item 2: in my opinion, this story is better and more interesting than the first one. the message is also clear and meaningful. however, you forgot to mention a mentaphor : the rooster is implied as a person who has arrogant apperance but doesnt harm you at all.

    3. item 3: this is my favourite item as it shows readers a practical problem that we have to face in the daily life. it's also clear to realize the damage of tobacco to human.

in short, i think you did a good job on your first entry, keep doing!
