Entry 1_Phạm Thị Nga

Name: Phạm Thị Nga
Class: E12
Entry 1

1. Poem:

Hell and Heaven

Hell is other people who
No matter what you do
Always find something to judge
They drag you through the sludge
And see through your thin disguise
As they shred you with their eyes
All their faults and lack
They place upon your back
Unable to see their own transgression
It becomes their only obsession
To find all of your flaws
And all your broken laws
And they won’t even let you live
Because they refuse to forgive

Heaven is other people who
No matter what you do
Choose to see the best
In you and forget the rest
They don’t dwell on your sin
Since they want all to win
They don’t create divisions
By their prideful derisions
Of those with whom they differ
For they know that the transfer
Of their own guilt to another
Will come back and smother
Their efforts to be free
And their search for unity

Rhetorical devices:
-             Parallelism: Hell -  Heaven
Hell - people who always find something to judge
Heaven -  people who choose to see the best
-               Rhyme

Judge
sludge
Lack
Back
Flaws
Laws
Who
Do
Best
Rest
Sin
Win
Divisions
derisions
Another
smother

-              Repetition
Hell / Heaven is other people who
  No matter what you do

·         Moral lesson: Whatever the life is hell or heaven depends on the way people treat, value and affirm each other.

      2. The story: The Apple Tree

A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the treetop, ate the apples, took a nap under the shadow… He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by…the little boy had grown up, and he no
longer played around the tree every day. One day, the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad.
“Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy.
“I am no longer a kid, I do not play around trees any more” -The boy replied.
“I want toys. I need money to buy them.”
“Sorry, but I do not have money… But you can pick all my apples and sell them. So, you will have money".
The boy was so excited. He grabbed all the apples on the tree and left
happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples. The tree
was sad.
One day, the boy who now turned into a man returned And the tree was excited “Come and play with me” the tree said.
“I do not have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?"
“ Sorry”, “I do not have any house. But you can chop off my branches To build your house.”
So the man cut all the branches of the tree and left happily. The tree was
glad to see him happy but the man never came back since then. The tree
was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, The man returned and the tree was delighted.
“Come and play with me!” the tree said.
“I am getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” - Said the man.
“Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy”
So the man cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time.
Finally, the man returned after many years.
“Sorry, my boy. But I do not have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you…” - The tree said18
“No problem, I do not have any teeth to bite” - The man replied.
“No more trunk for you to climb on”
“I am too old for that now” the man said.
“I really cannot give you anything… The only thing left is my dying root,” - the tree said with tears.
“I do not need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years” - the man replied.
“Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest, come, come sit down with me and rest”
The man sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears…

  1. Hi Nga. These are my comments on your entry 1:
    - Item 1: This poem is so meaningful and you have analyzed it quite detailed. However, from my perspective, there are some mistakes in this item:
    • About rhetorical devices:
+ Rhyme: There are still some rhymes that you have not found yet: disguise – eyes, transgression – obsession, live – forgive, differ – transfer, free – unity.
+ In my opinion, I disagree with you on the rhetorical device: parallelism that you have gave, instead, from my point of view, hell – heaven is two symbols. Hell stands for evils with full of devils, sins and flaws; heaven stands for goodness with angels, love and sympathy ⇨ The author use metaphor to compare:
Hell – people with bad personalities: captiousness – always find something to judge, find all of your flaws; selfishness – refuse to forgive; irresponsibility and jealousness – all their faults and lack they place upon your back.
Heaven – people with good characteristics: optimism- see the best, forgiveness- don’t dwell on your sin, co-operation-want all to win.
    • About the message: I agree with you!

    - Item 2: I really like this story. It is very meaningful, too. I totally agree with you on the message you gave. However, I think you should shorten your message because it is quite long.

    - Item 3: The picture is so interesting. I like it and agree with your message and the rhetorical devices as well.

Overall, you have done a good job! Keep practicing!

  2. - Item 3: I think that we should not choose vietnamese picture like above.
+ The message should be clearer, we can add: the ignorance and rresponsible of authorities indirectly caused the polution.
