Entry 1_ Bùi Thị Loan
                                              Item 1 : Poem

Nothing Twice

Nothing can ever happen twice.
In consequence, the sorry fact is
that we arrive here improvised
and leave without the chance to practice.

Even if there is no one dumber,
if you're the planet's biggest dunce,
you can't repeat the class in summer:
this course is only offered once.

No day copies yesterday,
no two nights will teach what bliss is
in precisely the same way,
with precisely the same kisses.

One day, perhaps some idle tongue
mentions your name by accident:
I feel as if a rose were flung
into the room, all hue and scent.

The next day, though you're here with me,
I can't help looking at the clock:
A rose? A rose? What could that be?
Is it a flower or a rock?

Why do we treat the fleeting day
with so much needless fear and sorrow?
It's in its nature not to stay:
Today is always gone tomorrow.

With smiles and kisses, we prefer
to seek accord beneath our star,
although we're different (we concur)
just as two drops of water are.

Rhetorical devices

Rhyme : twice – practice,  dumber - summer, dunce – once, is – kisses, accident – scent, me – be, clock – rock, day – stay, sorrow – tomorrow, star – are.

Metaphor:  clock ( time);  our star ( our dream, our love, our  happiness); two drops of water ( some of people in  the world).

Message:  as we know, time is the value of money. It means that nothing can’t happen twice. It is essential for our life, so we should save and use  effectively our time.

                                                 Item 2 : Picture

Metaphor : soldier ( a war); bachelor ( a job)

Message : In  modern society , people must compete  each other to find a job in order to earn daily life. In facts, unemployment is very higher every year while thousands of students graduated  from  universities or colleges. In addition, overpopulation and nature resources become the warm global issues for many  nations, especially development countries. As a result, the job is a complicated  problem  with government in order to deal with.

                                                            Item 3: Cartoon

                                                             Funny cartoon

Source : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d3QDdXpP0g

Message: when  you have difficulty  in the life, let’s struggle with challenges. Because you only give up the first time , it will happen the second time and so on. Another advice is  that you are willing to brave  whatever  the case might be . “never give up, never give in”. Fight it!

  1. i quite like your entry, especially the cartoon. you find rhetorical devices and message well.
    nevertheless, i have some suggestions:
i don't think twiece- practice is rhyme
in the third item, you haven't found the rhetorical device, i think it uses metaphor
in addition, the message of cartoon is that you need to find out the best way/ the best method to overcome challenges easier

  2. I agree with you on the message you showed in item 1; however, I disagree with you at some points in item 2 and 3.
Item 2:- I think the soldier is people or governments that want to wage war(s)and the bachelor is people who want to find jobs.
    - From my perspective, the message is that while economy is getting worse the government(s) only focus on making war(s)instead of finding solution to this problem.
Item 3: I don't really understand the message of the cartoon itself though I find it very funny. The message you pointed out, I think, is more than that is mentioned in this cartoon.

  3. after reading your entry, i have some following comments for you:
firstly, all your items meet the entry's requirements as they include the poem/video/picture, rhetorical devices as well as messages.
    about each item:

    1. item 1: i think you pointed out rhetorical devices well and the message is clear. however, i notice that "twiece"- "practice" is not a rhyme (but you mentioned it is).

    2. item 2: this is my favourite item since it's practical for our real life. but i don't think it's a good idea to point out too detailed message which is not shown in the picture like you have written : " overpopulation and nature resources become the warm global issues for many nations, especially development countries". i dont see it from the above picture. therfore, i suppose that it would be better if you keep it as only: nowadays, when the economy is going down, the government is concentrating on war more than on people's jobs.

    3. item 3: in my opinion, this is a funny cartoon. however, the message is a bit not accurate with this short video as it doesnt contain that much meaning. i don't think it's neccesary to say " Another advice is that you are willing to brave whatever the case might be." after watching this video.

  4. hey Loan, there are my comments for your entry:
1, 1st item: you did well when pointing out the rhetorical devices as well as messages.however, "twiece"- "practice" is not rhyme.
    2. 2nd item: i don't agree with your message because the picture seemed to mention unemployment. i mean taht it may focus on employment policy more.
    3. 3 rd item: i don't agree ưith your option ưhen you said that " Because you only give up the first time , it will happen the second time and so on. Another advice is that you are willing to brave whatever the case might be . “never give up, never give in”. Fight it!" it seem to be unaccurate.
hope my comments helpful for you next time
