Entry 1_ Lê Thị Ngọc Anh

Entry 01_Le Thi Ngoc Anh
Item 1: Poem

A Poison Tree

I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears,
Night and morning with my tears;
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine.
And he knew that it was mine,

And into my garden stole
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning glad I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.
By William Blake.

Rhetorical devices:
  1. Ryhme: friend-end, foe-grow, fears-tears, smiles-wiles, night-bright, shine-mine, stole-pole, see-tree
  2. Repetition: I was angry with my..., I told..., and I..., and...
  3. Metaphor: the tree (wrath)
  4. Metonymy: tears (water), smiles (sunshine)
Message:
It is about how turning the other cheek is really just suppressing your anger and eventually it will just get worse. You need to outright tell people when you are angry with them and you need to legitimately forgive them whether or not they are your friend. Don't keep grudge, a timely catharsis gives relief, and while maintaining our mental equilibrium makes us able to lead a healthy life.

Item 2: Story

Helpless Love

Once upon a time all feelings and emotions went to a coastal island for vacation. According to their nature, each was having a good time. Suddenly, a warning of an impending storm was announced and everyone was advised to evacuate the island.
The announcement caused sudden panic. All rushed to their boats. Even damaged boats were quickly repaired and commissioned for duty.
Yet, Love did not wish to flee quickly. There was so much to do. But as the clouds darkened, Love realized it was time to leave. Alas, there were no boats to spare. Love looked around for hope.
Just then Prosperity passed by in a luxurious boat. Love shouted, “Prosperity, could you please take me in your boat?”
“No,” replied Prosperity, “my boat is full of precious possessions, gold and silver. There is no place for you.”
A little later Vanity came by in a beautiful boat. Again Love shouted, “Could you help me,Vanity? I am stranded and need a lift. Please take me with you.”
Vanity responded haughtily, “No, I cannot take you with me. My boat will get soiled with your muddy feet.”
Sorrow passed by after some time. Again, Love asked for help. But it was to no avail. “No, I cannot take you with me. I am so sad. I want to be by myself.”
When Happiness passed by a few minutes later, Love again called for help. But Happiness was so happy that it did not look around, hardly concerned about anyone.
Love was growing restless and dejected. Just then somebody called out, “Come Love, I will take you with me.” Love did not know who was being so magnanimous, But jumped on the boat, greatly relieved that she would reach a safe place.
On getting off the boat, Love met Knowledge. Puzzled, Love inquired, “Knowledge, do you know who so generously gave me a lift just when no one else wished to help?”
Knowledge smiled, “Oh that was Time.”
“And why would Time stop to pick me and take me to safety?” Love wondered.
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and replied, “Because only Time knows your true greatness and what you are capable of. Only love can bring peace and great happiness in this world.”
Rhetorical devices:
  1. Metaphor: Love, vanity, sorrow, hapiness (feelings and emotions of human being); prosperity (the physical value of human's life), knowledge (wide knowledgeable man), time (the duration of one's life, the hours and days which a person has at his disposal)
Message:
When we are prosperous, we overlook love. When we feel important, we forget love. Even in happiness and sorrow we forget love. Only with time do we realize the importance of love. Why wait that long? Why not make love a part of your life today?

Item 3: Cartoon

Rhetorical devices:
  1. Metaphor: Rocks (something happens unexpectedly); God in white dress ( person who has power over nature protects human from sorrow; pain and brings us happiness...), the boy (human)
Message:
We may pray and pray for a good and happy life, but no matter what and how much we pray, there will always be something '' unpleasant '' that happens to us anyway. But let's not overlook that these '' unpleasant '' things may have just been a small fragment of what God was really protecting us from.

  1. Hi Na, I have some comments after reading yourr post.
    - Item 1 and item 2: I totally agree with you
    - Item 3: I think that you need realise the kindness as well as the warm heart of god. The nicer god is, the more greedy people become.
That's my personal thoughts. Hope that it can help you.

  2. Hi Ngoc Anh! After reading your post, I have some comments below about 3 items:

    1. Item 1: I agree with you about the rhetorical devices. However, you should add more details to the third and fourth devices to make it clearer.

    2. Item 2: Your story is really meaningful and interesting. :) However, I think we have one more items in Metaphor devices. This is a storm which stand for the hardship in our life. And only in the difficult situation when we need the help of each other, we only know the true thoughts and characters of others. I mostly concur with your message, however it'll be better if you clarify it clearly by using some simple words to make the reader understand your message easily.

    3. Item 3: in this cartoon, I only have a small comment to your message. I think we are reaaly small in fornt of the kindness and the tolerance of God. And somehow, when having some difficulties, people don't do anythings to overcome it. We just complain and blame on God, so that people will become more selfish and insatiable.

That all my comments about your entry 1. Thank you for reading my comments. :)

  3. Hi Ngoc Anh,

I must say that I was strongly impressed by your entry, especially the messages. You seem to pay much attention and to give great efforts to find out the messages hidden inside each items, and to make it clear to readers. I really appreciate it. However, in my opinion, if the messages were a little bit shorter, you know, brief sentences are easier to understand, that would be great.
I think in the item 3, in the picture, the God somehow is on behalf of luck life give each of us. People always complaint about their unluckiness in life but never realize how lucky they are to receive all good things, or, at least to live and breath on Earth (without "God", the man could have died because of stones).
That is only my personal point of view. Hope you can do better the next time.

  4. Hello Ngoc Anh. After reading your entry 1, I have some comments for you:
    - Item 1: Personally, I think this poem is so meaningful and you have written the rhetorical devices and message very detailed. However, I still find other rhetorical devices in this item:
+ Repetition: There are still some repetitions that you have not found yet: wrath, angry
    + Antithesis: friend – foe
    • About the message: From my point of view, the message of any poems, stories, cartoons, etc. should be from 1 to 2 sentences only. All of your messages in 3 items are so long, therefore you should shorten it and make it more concise. However, I agree with you on the content of the message in this item.

    - Item 2: I really like this story. It is very meaningful and interesting, too. I agree with Van Anh’s comment. That is: a storm stands for the hardship in people’s life. Besides, I totally agree with you on the message you gave. However, as I have said above, I think you should shorten your message because it is quite long.

    - Item 3: The picture is so interesting. I agree with the rhetorical devices you gave but your message should be shorter and include one more point: When people have difficulties, they don’t take any action and only blame on God.

On the whole, thanks for your meaningful items and keep doing a good job in the next entries.
