Entry 03_ Le Thi Ngoc Anh

ENTRY 3
Indentifying bias

Item 1:

  • Prejudice and racism
  • Analysis: I think that everyone is prejudice. Even those who claim they are not are a little prejudice on the inside. The picture above shows how a lot of people take "extra precautions" on a daily basis. They do take more "precautions" if they see a person of color walking behind them than a  caucasian in a business suit. I wish there was not a such thing as racism and prejudice, but it is present in everyone. And there is nothing we can do about it.

Item 2:

  • -         Stereotype
  • -      Analysis: Acording to the picture, one must perform specific roles as "girls" and "boys, "women" and "men". This takes away our personal freedom in deciding our own interests and skills. It also discourages men from participating in "women's work" like becoming a nurse and it restricts women from choosing roles that are traditionally "male" like engineering or science.

Item 3:

  • -         Scapegoating
  • -   Analysis: It is clear that the excellent applicant was refused only because her qualification reminded the interviewer of someone he hated in high school. She must accept that unfair result.

  1. Dear Ngoc Anh,
After reading three items in your entry 3, I have some comments for you:

    - Item 1: From my perspective, the type of bias in this item is discrimination (Racism) only. Because the white person in this picture has a negative opinion about the black person and he takes action in order to stay away from the black person (prejudice in action)
    - Item 2: I agree with you on the type of bias in this case, that is stereotype.
    - Item 3: In my opinion, the kind of bias here is discrimination, not scapegoating. You can see that the candidate is refused because the interviewer has a negative feeling about the candidate (he reminds the interviewer of someone that the interviewer hated in the high school).

In general, you did a really good job! I hope my comments will be useful for you so that you can revise your entry effectively. Keep practicing!

  2. Hi,
i have some cmt for your entry 3 to help it better
    - 3 items in your entry are picture only. I think you should choose items more diversity
    - you also should give sources
    - item 1 and item 2: i total agree with you about types of bias as well as analysis.
    - item 3: i think it is discrimination. although the candidate has good quality and impressive references but he isn't accepted because the interviewer hates someone in high school

  3. Hi Ngoc Anh,
After watching your 3 items, i have some comments:
1st item: I think it is racism, not prejudice. Because in this case, the white person totally know the fact that man is a black guy. This led to the prejudice in his action.
2nd item: I agree with you
3rd item: I think it is discrimination as well
Hope that our comments will be usefull for you
    Best,
