Entry 3_Hoang Thi Thuy

Entry 3-Hoang Thi Thuy

                                                       Topic: Bias

Item 1: A picture

-          Type of bias: Discrimination

-          Analysis:  As you can see in the picture, a hand prevents a black fish from joining the group of yellow fishes. That hand is referred as racism that still exists in some part of the world.

Item 2: A cartoon

-          Type of bias: Discrimination

-          Analysis: A white man complain that in awful recession, even if he found a job, the pay sucked. His speech clearly shows that he is a white person who is in better level than women and black people. It expresses a serious sex discrimination and discrimination of race.

Item 3: An example of TV series-1989

Have you ever seen ‘The Simpsons’-a TV series in 1989?

The Simpsons is an animated sitcom about the antics of a dysfunctional family called the Simpsons (surprise surprise). Homer Simpson is the oafish unhealthy beer loving father, Marge is the hardworking homemaker wife, Bart is the ten year old underachiever (and proud of it), Lisa is the unappreciated eight year old genius, and Maggie is the cute, pacifier loving silent infant.

-          Type of bias: Stereotype

-          Analysis: Homer Simpson completely epitomizes the perception of the American stereotype that Americans are obese, lazy and dull. However, his daughter, Lisa is reviewed as a genius, bright and intelligent, thereby countering that view immediaterly. It is a stereotype.

  1. Dear Thuy,
I agree with you on your Item 1 and Item 3, here is my comment for your Item 2. For my perspectives, this picture express the prejudice because the white said that " If even I find a job, the pay sucks! It's like I'm black, a woman or something", it means that the man always think that only the black and women are low-paid. Therefore, it should be prejudice.
All in all, you are well-done!

  2. Your entry have been done quite well,
I totally agree with you on 1st item, however, 2nd item expresses prejudice because the white man’s speech just shows his negative opinion that the black and women must be paid low salary.
In the 3rd item, I think the type of bias may be prejudice because Homer Simpson completely epitomizes the perception of the American stereotype that Americans are obese, lazy and dull.
Hope that my point can be useful for reviewing your entry

  3. Dear Thuy,
I can't deny that your entry is very interesting and informative as well. I am totally impressed by the first image. By using the image of 2 kinds of fish, the author can create the feeling of discrimination.
I agree with you on item 1 and 3. However, with item 2, i think the type of bias here is prejudice because in the thought of that man only the black and women or something like that are low-paid.
Anyway, you did a good job! Keep trying and thanks for reading this! :)
