Identifying bias


Item1: Picture

* Type of bias: Discrimination
* Analysis: There is no gender equality at workplace. We can see clearly in the picture that there are three men standing together and forming a group/team to discuss something secretly, while the only one women standing alone without knowing what is going on and what to do. In fact, it was believed that women cannot be successful and do things as well as men. As a result, it seems like the woman should not interfere with what is none of her business, which is shown in action in the picture (women and men are divided into 2 groups and the distance between them is quite far). That's called unequality at business.

* Type of bias: Stereotype
* Analysis: In the picture, we can see men smoke instead of crying as the habits, with the slogan: "Men don't cry. They go for a smoke". In fact, people normally believe that men have to be strong no matter what bad thing happens. Because tears are the signs of weakness, they have never been allowed to show it out. That's the mental image of men based on opinion without regard to individual differences and feelings. Instead, when having trouble or bad feelings, they have to hide it by going for a smoke. Somehow, smoke is the best choice to relieve their pain or hide their sadness.

 “Tôi đã bật cười sung sướng”

 “Khi xem xong clip trả lời phỏng vấn của Nhật Nam, tôi đã bật cười sung sướng. Tôi không nghĩ em tự cao hay thiếu khiêm tốn. Tôi cười, vì ẩn sau một đứa trẻ hồn nhiên lại có cách trả lời rất lưu loát và không phân vân gì cả. Tôi đã từng tiếp xúc với Nam. Ngoài đời, cậu bé tự tin và nói năng lưu loát, chứng tỏ cháu rất thông minh. Ngôn ngữ ấy là do nỗ lực đọc sách, do trí tuệ của cháu phải phát triển đến thế thì mới nói được như vậy. Không có tư duy đó, chắc chắn không có ngôn ngữ đó. Tôi nghĩ, gene trí tuệ của Nam còn hơn nhiều người vì họ không biết gì để nói. Nếu ngôn ngữ vay mượn, học thuộc thì chỉ tiếp xúc một lát sẽ bị lộ ngay lập tức”.

* Type of bias: Assumption

* Analysis: We can see in the website the article about Nhat Nam - the 11 years old boy who has just set a new Guiness record and become the youngest translator in Vietnam. There has been many opinions and judgements are made after the day interview of Nhat Nam was released on Youtube, and here is from the critic Pham Xuan Nguyen. The conclusion about Nam's characteristics is based on the actual meet and talk between him and Nhat Nam, which are shown as "Tôi đã từng tiếp xúc với Nam. Ngoài đời, cậu bé tự tin và nói năng lưu loát...." In contrast, many people who have never seen Nhat Nam in real life still have many negative judgement about this little boy, like "tự cao hay thiếu khiêm tốn...". In fact, he is just only 11 years old so that he is too carefree, or perhaps, not aware of what he is saying could lead to argument in social network like that. People who just have limited view and knowledge about this kid shouldn't have the right to judge him like that.
