Identifying bias
Item1: Picture
source: http://secondsexx.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/ak-partiden-mobbinge-savas.jpg
* Type of bias: Discrimination
* Analysis: There is no gender equality at workplace. We can see clearly in the picture that there are three men standing together and forming a group/team to discuss something secretly, while the only one women standing alone without knowing what is going on and what to do. In fact, it was believed that women cannot be successful and do things as well as men. As a result, it seems like the woman should not interfere with what is none of her business, which is shown in action in the picture (women and men are divided into 2 groups and the distance between them is quite far). That's called unequality at business.
Item2: Picture
source: http://www.demotivation.us/men-dont-cry-1245322.html
* Type of bias: Stereotype
* Analysis: In the picture, we can see men smoke instead of crying as the habits, with the slogan: "Men don't cry. They go for a smoke". In fact, people normally believe that men have to be strong no matter what bad thing happens. Because tears are the signs of weakness, they have never been allowed to show it out. That's the mental image of men based on opinion without regard to individual differences and feelings. Instead, when having trouble or bad feelings, they have to hide it by going for a smoke. Somehow, smoke is the best choice to relieve their pain or hide their sadness.
Item3: Newspaper

* Type of bias: Assumption
* Analysis: We can see in the website the article about Nhat Nam - the 11 years old boy who has just set a new Guiness record and become the youngest translator in Vietnam. There has been many opinions and judgements are made after the day interview of Nhat Nam was released on Youtube, and here is from the critic Pham Xuan Nguyen. The conclusion about Nam's characteristics is based on the actual meet and talk between him and Nhat Nam, which are shown as "Tôi đã từng tiếp xúc với Nam. Ngoài đời, cậu bé tự tin và nói năng lưu loát...." In contrast, many people who have never seen Nhat Nam in real life still have many negative judgement about this little boy, like "tự cao hay thiếu khiêm tốn...". In fact, he is just only 11 years old so that he is too carefree, or perhaps, not aware of what he is saying could lead to argument in social network like that. People who just have limited view and knowledge about this kid shouldn't have the right to judge him like that.

aAnalysis : This proverb reflects the gender discrimination. it shows that if having only son, thí family has the child whereas if this family has ten daughter , it still be consider as no child
- Prejudice and racism
- Analysis: I think that everyone is prejudice. Even those who claim they are not are a little prejudice on the inside. The picture above shows how a lot of people take "extra precautions" on a daily basis. They do take more "precautions" if they see a person of color walking behind them than a caucasian in a business suit. I wish there was not a such thing as racism and prejudice, but it is present in everyone. And there is nothing we can do about it.
- - Stereotype
- - Analysis: Acording to the picture, one must perform specific roles as "girls" and "boys, "women" and "men". This takes away our personal freedom in deciding our own interests and skills. It also discourages men from participating in "women's work" like becoming a nurse and it restricts women from choosing roles that are traditionally "male" like engineering or science.
Item 3:
- - Scapegoating
- - Analysis: It is clear that the excellent applicant was refused only because her qualification reminded the interviewer of someone he hated in high school. She must accept that unfair result.

ITEM 1:
- discrimination
- Analysis:
In this advertisement, the father always considers the son better than the daughter. That shows directly in his whole action. He forces the daughter to do everything, but the son has to do nothing. It is clear that it still exists the difference in gender and the girls are inferior to the boys.
ITEM 2:
- Stereotype
- Analysis:
In some places,Overweight and obese youth frequently are teased, harassed and mistreated because of their weight. Weight-related teasing (weight bias) can have a damaging impact on both emotional and physical health.
ITEM 3:

- Analysis
Many people, especially older people often think that if you are a woman, you MUST know how to cook. The printed picture shows that women's duty is cooking.

ITEM 1 :
-Prejudice
[Phóng sự] PÊ ĐÊ _ ICSVN
-Analysis: This picture is about a couple of a black boy and a white girl. They are trying to reach each other but do not succeed . Both of them feel very scary and nervous whenever they want to get to each other. Even when they get to each other, hold their hands ; their love becomes be shattered . This love is not accepted just because of a simple reason that they have different skin color.
ITEM 2 :
ITEM 2 :
- Stereotype
- Analysis: In many people's awareness, man have to be masculine, they have to be strong , tall, look very gorgeous as a hero ( as a lifeguard in this picture). On the contrary, women have to take care of children, household chores and look very sloppy.
ITEM 3:
[Phóng sự] PÊ ĐÊ _ ICSVN
- Discrimination
- Analysis: This is a documentary film about transgenders in Vietnam. It's true that, they- transgenders - are not treated well in the daily life. They are regarded as the lowest class in the society, they have to do many things that are considered damn bad or dirty . They are isolated and discriminated from the society just because they're not in their real genders , real appearances, even though they didn't do anything wrong. Still a day that people isolate, stay away from them ; they feel very depressed and afraid. They want people around them look at them as normal people , not a disgusting creatures. They want equality and enthusiasm from the society.

Type of bias: Prejudice
Analysis: This is a commercial of Pond's Flawless White (Philippines version). It is undeniable that Pond's function is to whiten and lighten the skin but the story presented in the commercial is not so romantic as how people think about it at first. We can see from the advertisement that the boy left his girlfriend for another whiter girl although she has waited for him for 5 years. The former girl was so upset. Later she saw a Pond's commercial and its white-care function, she used it and her skin became whiter. When the boy came to her slower shop and saw her, he was surprised by her beauty. In the end, the girl, who was white and beautiful then and the boy got back together. This is an example of prejudice about the not-so-white girl. Maybe it's not pond's attention to show their racist attitude to women with dark complexion, but what we can refer from the story is that those dark girls are not beautiful (just after they use Pond's product they become beautiful) and more seriously, they don't find their true love (because the boys will find whiter ones who they regard as "beautiful").
Item 2: An article

" Mrs. Liu could have had three daughters by now. But the shame and legal costs would have been unbearable, so she gave her second daughter away at birth and aborted a third when an ultrasound scan showed that fetus, too, was female.
In 1949, the Communist Party took power promising to end centuries of degradation for China's women. Yet hundreds of thousands of unwanted baby girls are abandoned, aborted and even killed each year.
For poor, rural families, the choice is as stark as it is cruel. To keep a girl risks public ridicule in villages where traditions favoring boys still run strong.
Government limits on family sizes imposed since 1979 also mean that by keeping a girl, couples can lose their chance for a boy--long prized in China as the heir who will carry on the family name, till the family plot and care for his parents in old age.
"A woman without a son will be cursed by her mother-in-law and laughed at by the village," says Liu, a farmer in the impoverished eastern province of Anhui. "Everybody thinks it's the duty of a woman to bear a boy."
Liu, 36, asks that her full name not be used for fear that village officials who enforce birth quotas might punish her if they learned of the daughter she gave away. Those quotas, aimed at slowing the growth of China's population, now 1.26 billion, limit rural families to one child, or two if the first is a girl. A third would have brought Mrs. Liu heavy fines or maybe even a forced abortion......................................"
Type of bias: scapegoating and discrimination
Analysis: unwanted baby girls are abandoned, aborted and even killed each year because of the tradition that boy is the heir of the family. Baby girls are seriously rejected in the community. This is scapegoating. And women who give birth to girls (Mrs. Liu in the article as an example) are treated unfairly and burdened by the "duty" that they are supposed to conduct "bear a boy for the family" This is definitely a kind of discrimination.
Item 3: A photo
Type of bias: assumption
Analysis: We can see in the picture two rabbits with their 2 carrots. The rabbit in the right of the picture is very proud of his carrot because the there are so many big green leaf top of the carrot. He looks down on the other because his carrot has small leaf top. However the former doesn't know that under these big leaves lies a tiny carrot and under that small leaf top lies a huge carrot. This is a kind of assumption because the rabbit in the right judges too quickly based on what he sees obviously, and doesn't think about other facts, which may be hidden and not spotted immediately.

Item
2:
-Discrimination
- There is a sex- discrimination in the family. The
girl must do all things while the boy goes out and plays games. It is supposed
that the girl is useless and stupid person and only boy can take over the family’s
company. Because of the family’s rejection, she has to get out and have an
independent life. After that, she is very successful thank to her best attempt
and then she has a big house and good career. About the boy, he failed his
business and now lives in a tent. In my opinion, everything is done without
depending on the boy or the girl. After watching the video, we realize that it
shouldn’t be done something that treats unfairly between members of a family,
especially between male and female.

-Discrimination
-Nowadays, in many interviews, employers appreciate
the height factor besides candidates’ experience and qualification. The picture
illustrates clearly about emphasize on the height between interviewees. Just by
reaching the banana hanged in, whoever can grab first is the winner- a new

appearance seriously will create unfairness in the society and lead to the
high- calibre staff not to have a chance to express their talent.

This is palpably racism in its worst kind and discrimination of the lowest order! It is clearly seen that this shop looks down on people who come from these countries and considers them as dog - an inferior animal. It is stupid extremism to discriminate human beings.

Discrimination: Sex
Type of bias: Prejudice
Analysis: We can read the article about two commentators who criticized a female assistant referee. This case is sexual discrimination when thinking that women had no knowledge about sports. There are no rules say that only men have the right to these aspects. In fact, women can do well as men do, or even better; however, they are not recognized as they deserved.

Type of bias: Steotype
Analysis: This clip is about two racist kids. They are complaining about what people called them, they are called by their skin colours instead of their names. People sometimes consider others as their appearances, they know that since they was a kid. Around the world, in many countries, the racial discrimination happens frequently because of the different colours that their skins are.

|
Type of bias: Discrimination
Analysis: This cartoon compares the attitude of the media to
the sayings of two people, one is the Republican candidate John McCain in 2008
presidential election and the other is the election winner Democratic President
Barack Obama. Both of them said the same words, yet received contrast answer
from the press. McCain said his words during the election, and was considered
to be “out of touch” of the American economic situation. President Barack Obama
said his word in March 2009, two months after he began his term in office and
received roses and people speak his famous word “Hope”. This cartoon shows the
bias of the media toward the two parties as well the two political leaders
without considering the real fact of the U.S. economy.
Item 2: Image
- Type of bias: Discrimination.
- Analysis:
It was commonly believed that in Ancient society, women were not allow neither to go to school nor start business. In other words, it was uncommon to see women succeeding. They could not do things as men could do.They were seem differently from men. As a result, if they did go to school, or start a business or do something like that, they would be stopped by men.
The belief mentioned is a stereotype, the opinion that women could not do things as men could is a prejudice; and finally, the act of men preventing women from doing things like them (prejudice in action) is characterized as discrimination.
Item 3: Video
• Type of bias: Discrimination and prejudice
• Analysis:
This video is a part of the famous film, namely “the Help”. In this video, the
woman named Hilly had a prejudice that every black nanny brought about many
different diseases which were very dangerous for her and her family, so she
needed to protect herself and her family as well. This leads to a
discrimination that white people need to have a separate bathroom for black
nannies outside their house.

Escape to a kid-free village
Retirement hamlets that ban children are
such a hit that over-45s now have them too
The following apology was printed in the Observer's
For the record column, Sunday May 18, 2003
We were
stretching a point in describing Hartrigg Oaks, the Rowntree Foundation's
continuing care retirement community in York ,
as a place 'where children fear to tread'. The development includes a 50-place
day nursery where several residents help as volunteers.
For those
driven to distraction by screaming children in the local pub and library, a
brave new world beckons. The days of dodging skateboarders and worrying about
meeting threatening youths after dark are over. Adults-only villages have
arrived.
Anyone under 45 is exlcuded from the new developments,
modelled on retreats that have been hugely successful in the United States .
Residents can play golf, relax in the swimming pool or spend an afternoon
reading, all safe from interruption by noisy kids and flying football…
(Stephen
Khan)
·
Type of
bias: Scapegoating
·
Analysis: The
writer mentioned a new kind of place only for adults over 45. This kind of area
is isolated and children or teenagers, people under 45 is not allowed to
enter. The root of this new development lies in the fact that old people cannot
enjoy the quiet or peaceful atmosphere with the presence of the young. The
children ( the young in general) are blamed for the noisy environment and that
the old cannot live in the same surrounding with others.

Item 1: Clip
- Type of bias: assumption
- Analysis: A lot of situations in that misunderstanding
appears so many times just because people judge too quickly, not considering
things carefully. For example, A wife seeing her husband with a knife and
the cat with blood immediately thinks that he has just killed the cat. A girl
thinks her boy friend is "playing with himself" when she sees him
watching "sensitive" scene on TV and doing something with his hands
without knowing that he's just polishing his shoes. There are many misunderstanding situations for people to conclude quickly
and the bad results can created.

- Type of bias: Prejudice.
- Analysis: The two folk-songs show the prejudice in favour of women. Every behaviour in their families, they must suffer from constraints, in spite of stern and nonsense ones. When women get married, they always conform to harsh concepts of feudal system. That out-of date notions ties down women, does not enable them to choose the way of life on their own and overcome the border lines that society unfairly established.

discrimination and is against the human rights. It is also a negative judgment
