ENTRY 3
Identifying bias
ITEM 1:
ü Discrimination.
ü Analysis: The comic
expresses negative attitude towards pregnant women. The employer here does not
accept to hire a woman who are going to give birth.
ITEM 2:
ü
Discrimination
ü
This comic condemns clearly a case of blatant discrimination of weight. The author want
to emphasize the severity of obesity compared to other dicrimination types
which are no longer existed or worth mentioning nowadays. Especially, the
severity is clarified more with his own story of how impolite he was treated in
completely irrelevant to weight job when he is overweight.
ITEM 3:
ü Discrimination (racism)
ü This picture is cut from a website. It is
one of many other jobs which require that ‘English must be your first language’.
Admittedly the jobs being advertised are writing jobs that require a certain
ability with words, but surely the question of whether English is your first or
second language should not come into it. Could you not be someone who speaks
both languages equally fluently? Because the job boards referred to are visited by lots of people from foreign countries;
therefore, it can be interpreted ‘English must be your first language’ as ‘no Indians or Asians
please’.
