ENTRY 3: IDENTIFYING BIAS
Item 1:
-
Discrimination
- Analysis:
there are two girls who are musicians. One of them is mute. The rest girl
looked down on the mute girl because she thought that the mute girl couldn’t
play violin well. Specially, she also blamed the mute girl when she was
practicing to play violin. Because of her negative attitudes, she hired some
people to break up the show of the mute girl in the stress as well as defeating
her violin. It is example for discrimination.
Item 2:
-
Prejudice
-
Analysis: the male mouse pointed to the female
mouse and said ‘how unfair is this new dress code’. It means that she isn’t
suitable for the new dress. The sentences ‘it wasn’t unfair before’ expresses
that this situation hasn’t yet appeared in the past. We can understand that it is
a man’s attitudes toward a woman. This situation referred to a position of man
and women in a company. The man don’t often look up on women’s value and think
that the women gain high position in the company is unfair.
Item 3:
- Prejudice
-
Analysis: the son intended to touch the snack. The mom saw
that and said ‘Don’t touch him …He’s slimy’. The mom thought that the snack was
dangerous for her son. It is a stereotype of the mom. However, the other snack
worried about his friend and also said that ‘Don’t touch him … He’s slimy’. The other
snack thought that the son is dangerous for his friend. It is also a stereotype
of the snack.
Dear Hong,
ReplyDeleteI would like to leave some comments on your entry 3 after I read all the items:
- Item 1: I agree with you on the type of bias in this case, that is discrimination.
- Item 2: I do not understand why you analysed that: “This situation referred to a position of men and women in a company. The men don’t often look up on women’s value and think that the women gain high position in the company is unfair.” Could you explain more to me?
- Item 3: From my perspective, the type of bias in this item is prejudice. Do you think that this stereotype in this picture is negative? If you think the answer is “yes”, then the kind of bias here should be “prejudice”.
Overall, you did a good job. Hope my comments will be useful for you. Keep practicing so that you can do better in the next entry!
Thank you for you useful comments. they help me have more ideas for each my item. now I will explain some details for you to more understand.
Delete- item 2: I said 'the men don't look up on the women's value' because the male mouse (man) thinks that the man worn shirt and tie and worked in the company is common, while the female mouse (woman) worked in the company is unfair. This situation wasn't unfair before because the woman wasn't allowed to learn and work in the past period. Therefore, when both work together in the same company, they think it's unfair.
- item 2: I agree with you. I will edit it.
