Identifying Bias
Item 1:
- Source: http://www.hrc.org/resources/entry/employment-non-discrimination-act-stories-of-discrimination
- Kathleen was a
research assistant in a lab at a university in Iowa. She had been working in
the lab for three years when she told her supervisor and her co-workers that
she was transgender and would be transitioning from male to female. Within
weeks, the department administrator told Kathleen that because of her
"condition" the lab felt she could no longer give sufficient effort
to the department. When Kathleen complained to the university’s affirmative
action office, they ordered her not to be terminated as long as she agreed to
find work in another department. Unfortunately, despite interviews in other
departments, no one would hire her. She ultimately quit and left Iowa in 2002.
- Discrimination: Sexism.
- - Analysis:
During 3 years before
Kathleen revealed her gender, there had been no complaint about her “condition”.
But when others knew that she was transgender, they did not want to work with
her anymore. Not only people in her department but also people in other
departments at Iowa shared
the same opinion against Kathleen’s gender. In this situation, there is the
discrimination against transsexuals.
I Item 2:
- Stereotype.
- - Analysis:
· In
the poster, the woman shows an amazed expression. What amazes her is that she
can open the bottle herself
· Her
hand is painted as a feminine hand pose that contains no power.
· Under
the picture, there is a question 'You mean a woman can open it?', with
the word ‘woman’ is underlined.
· In
the first passage, we can see this sentences “Easily—without a knife blade, a
bottle opener, or even a husband!”. This can be understood that women are not
strong enough to open just a bottle cap herself, without any help from outside
or from their husbands.
Ø In conclusion, there is gender
stereotype of women as the weaker gender. They have to depend on men in a lot
of work.
Item 3:
Immigrants bring more crime
IMMIGRATION from Eastern Europe has led to a huge surge in crime, police chiefs will tell the Home Secretary today.
The hundreds of thousands of migrants who have flocked to Britain in recent years have had a significant impact on communities and have placed fresh demands on policing, a review has found.Pressure on police resources has soared while a lack of criminal intelligence from Poland and its neighbours has left the UK vulnerable to criminal gangs.
- Scapegoating.
- Analysis:
- The first striking point of the article is the headline “ IMMIGRANTS BRING MORE CRIME” which means that immigration leads to an increase in crime rates in the US.
- Moreover, in the lead-in, the author writes "IMMIGRATION from Eastern Europe has led to a huge surge in
crime..."
- In the articles, the author uses some words and phrases like led to, huge surge, significant impact, fresh demand on policing, soared, vulnerable to criminal gangs.
