Entry 4_Nguyen Thi Hong Quynh

Item 1

 Funny Jokes About Drunk People

Four Worms and a lesson to be learned:
A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon.
Four worms were placed into four separate jars.
The first worm was put into a container of alcohol. The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke. The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup. The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.
At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results:
The first worm in alcohol -Dead.
The second worm in cigarette smoke - Dead
Third worm in chocolate syrup -Dead
Fourth worm in good clean soil -Alive.
So the Minister asked the congregation -
What did you learn from this demonstration?
Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said,
'As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won't have worms!'

Analysis: This argument is weak because of the wording, or inanother word, this argument is weak analogy. The "worm" in this funny story is about two different types of worms. The worm that the minister mentioned is inhabit land worm, meanwhile the worm that Maxine mentioned lives inside human bodies.

Item 2

During the 1990’s religious attendance has been on the rise.
Illegal drug use have been on the rise too.
____________________________________________
Religious attendance causes illegal drug use.
(Structure fallacy)
It is a weak argument that drug use leads to an increase in religious attendance. Maybe drug use and religious attendance are increased by a third variable, such as an increase in societal unrest. It is possible that both variables are independent of one another, and it is mere coincidence that they are both increasing at the same time.

Item 3

Mr. Lee's views on Japanese culture are not to be trusted, because his parents were both killed by the Japanese army during World War II and that made him anti-Japanese all his life.
Source: http://philosophy.hku.hk/think/fallacy/ex-fallacy.php
(ad hominem (again the man)/personal attack)
Pattern:
Japanese army killed his parent
The person who killed the other is bad
_____________________________
Japanese are bad
It is illogical that Mr. Lee does not trust in Japanese just because his parents were both killed by the Japanese army during World War II.
