Argument Structures and Fallacies

Item 1:

C« gi¸o : -  H·y nãi râ suy nghÜ cña em vÒ c©u tôc ng÷ “ Kh«ng thÇy ®è mµy lµm nªn”

ü  - Fallacies of ambiguity

ü - Analysis: The word “thầy” in the story is being misunderstood in two distinct ways here:

·       + First, the word “thầy” in the quote “Không thầy đố mày làm nên” means all the teachers who teach or instruct students in general. They can be male or female teachers, but Vietnamese people normally called them "thầy" to show their respectation.

·        + However, the student here understands that the word “thầy” here means the male teachers only. That's why he think the quote is wrong and "kh«ng cã thÇy th× ®· cã c«".

 Item 2:
Rằng tôi chút phận đàn bà. 
 Ghen tuông thì cũng người ta thường tình

- Structure of the argument:
            Premise 1: All women are usually jealous.

Premise 2: I am woman.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conclusion: Therefore, It is ok for me to be jealous.

- Fallacies: The first premise is false. In real life, we can see that there are still lots of women who never be jealous with others women or anyone. They are satisfied with what they have and know what they deserve.

Item 3:

Một người nghiện rượu nói với bạn của mình: “Mỗi lần say rượu tôi lại chửi bới đánh đập vợ con, tôi xấu hổ lắm, từ nay tôi sẽ không bao giờ uống rượu nữa”. Nhưng được vài hôm, tình cờ người bạn nghìn thấy người nghiện rượu đang uống rượu trong quán bèn chạy lại nói: “Sao anh lại thế này, anh đã hứa là sẽ không bao giờ uống rượu nữa kia mà?” Người nghiện rượu mới dãi bày tâm sự: “hic hic, bạn ơi, cứ mỗi lần nghĩ đến mình đã từng chửi bới đánh đập vợ con tôi thấy xấu hổ lắm. Tôi phải uống rượu để quên đi nỗi xấu hổ vì uống rượu, bạn ạ”

+ He was ashamed of the violent action on his wife and children because he had drunk.

+ He has to drink because he is ashamed of the violence of action on his wife and children.
