Entry 1- Hoàng Thị Thùy

Entry 1- Hoàng Thị Thùy

Item 1: Short poem.
Warning !
Jenny Joseph 1932 -

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me,
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
Rhetorical devices:
-          Repetition: “I shall wear purple” and “start to wear purple”
                “I shall… And”
-          Antithesis:   “ And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week “

Message: While there are responsibilities and commitments that must be honored, there is time for one to enjoy life and live that way one wishes to.

Item 2: Cartoon

Rhetorical devices:
Irony: two young men are in suits, but stand in cornfield
Message: refer to difficulties to finding jobs after graduating colleges.

Item 3: Short story

The Sun and The Wind

Once The Sun and The Wind happened to have a quarrel. Both of them claimed to be stronger. At last they agreed to have a trial of strength.

"Here comes a traveller. Let us see who can strip him of his cloak?" said the Sun.

The Wind agreed and did choose to have the first turn.

He blew in the hardest possible way.

As a result, the traveller wrapped his cloak even more tightly around him.

Then it was the turn of the Sun. At first he shone very gently. The sun went on shining brighter and brighter. The traveller felt hot.

Before long he took off his cloak and put it in his bag.

The Wind accepted his defeat.
Rhetorical devices:
Metaphor: the Sun with its action ”shone very gently” to the man: persuation
The Wind with its action “blew in the hardest possible way”to the man: force
Message: To think about the idea that persuasiveness can be more effective than force.

Entry 1_ Đinh Thị Vân Anh

Item 1: Poem
Time
Time goes fast
Time goes slow
Time sees people die
Time sees the grass grow
Time does not forget
Time does not forgive
Time crushes and kills
Time takes all you have to give
Time rushes past
Time ticks and tocks
Time is shown by the sun
Time is on the kitchen clock
Time is going slowly
Time tells you what must be done
Time is running out
Time waits for you to have fun
Time is impatient
Time is kind
Time is cruel
Time doesn't mind
Time is a second
Time is forever
Time is right this minute
Time is now or never

Premchand used to be very tense always. He was very keen to close the doors and windows of his house at night. He could not sleep well. He was always bothered that someone might break open his safes and steal away his money. He envied the peaceful Ramchand.

Item 3: short story
Five More Minutes

While at the park one day, a woman sat down next to a man on a bench near a playground.  “That’s my son over there,” she said, pointing to a little boy in a red sweater who was gliding down the slide.  “He’s a fine looking boy” the man said. “That’s my daughter on the bike in the no dress.”
Then, looking at his watch, he called to his daughter. “What do you say we go, Melissa?”  Melissa pleaded, “Just five more minutes, Dad. Please? Just five more minutes.”  The man nodded and Melissa continued to ride her bike to her heart’s content. Minutes passed and the father stood and called again to his daughter. “Time to go now?”
Again Melissa pleaded, “Five more minutes, Dad. Just five more minutes.”  The man smiled and said, “OK.”  “My, you certainly are a patient father,” the woman responded.
The man smiled and then said, “Her older brother Tommy was killed by a drunk driver last year while he was riding his bike near here. I never spent much time with Tommy and now I’d give anything for just five more minutes with him. I’ve vowed not to make the same mistake with Melissa.  She thinks she has five more minutes to ride her bike. The truth is, I get five more minutes to watch her play.”

Rhetorical devices:
Metaphor:
“five more minutes”

Message:
Life is all about making priorities.  Family is one and only priority on top of all other, so spend all time you can with loved ones.

                                       Item1: CARTOON

Rhetorical devices:
-  Metaphor:
+ The heart: the way people consider a thing with so much natural feelings, which is deep down from their souls about anything in life (love, friendship, family, ...)
+ The brain: the way people consider a thing logical and tactical.

=> Message: In our life, it seems to be hard at times to decide when to use your heart and when to use your brain. Both of them are necessary, and they exist in parallel in each of people. The problem is, the heart is weak and easy to be hurt while the brain is strong and smart. As a result, we have to learn how to balance between the heart and the brain, and when to let each of them lead your thoughts in order to fulfill your life.

Item2: SONG

"I Won't Give Up"

When I look into your eyes
It's like watching the night sky
Or a beautiful sunrise
Well, there's so much they hold
And just like them old stars
I see that you've come so far
To be right where you are
How old is your soul?

Well, I won't give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I'm giving you all my love
I'm still looking up

And when you're needing your space
To do some navigating
I'll be here patiently waiting
To see what you find

'Cause even the stars they burn
Some even fall to the earth
We've got a lot to learn
God knows we're worth it
No, I won't give up

I don't wanna be someone who walks away so easily
I'm here to stay and make the difference that I can make
Our differences they do a lot to teach us how to use
The tools and gifts we got, yeah, we got a lot at stake
And in the end, you're still my friend at least we did intend
For us to work we didn't break, we didn't burn
We had to learn how to bend without the world caving in
I had to learn what I've got, and what I'm not, and who I am

I won't give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I'm giving you all my love
I'm still looking up, still looking up.

Well, I won't give up on us (no I'm not giving up)
God knows I'm tough enough (I am tough, I am loved)
We've got a lot to learn (we're alive, we are loved)
God knows we're worth it (and we're worth it)

I won't give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I'm giving you all my love
I'm still looking up

Rhetorical devices:
1/ Rhyme
+ Terminal rhyme: eyes - sky - rise, hold - sold, stars - far - are, us - rough - love - up, navigating - waiting, burn - earth - learn, make - stake
 + Internal rhyme:
Well, there's so much they hold,
How old is your soul?,
And in the end, you're still my friend at least we did intend,
I had to learn what I've got, and what I'm not, and who I am,

2/ Simile:
When I look into your eyes
It's like watching the night sky
Or a beautiful sunrise
Well, there's so much they hold
And just like them old stars
I see that you've come so far..

3/ Symbol:
+ the skies get rough (difficulties, obstacles, ...)
+ God: the destination.

4/ Overstatement:
'Cause even the stars they burn
Some even fall to the earth

=> Message: In life, there are many difficulties that force you to cope with. No matter how hard they are, love will give you strength to overcome all. Even when life gives you thousand reasons to give up, show that you are both tough enough to keep holding on and moving forward. Instead of giving up, think positive, learn and stand together. That's your life, your destiny and you are the only one to decide how it would be.

Item3: STORY

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it.
Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been.
The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand.

Rhetorical devices:
- Metaphor:
+ The huge rock: the obstacle in our path.
+ Gold: the present for the good person that accepts the challenge.
=> Message: In life, people will face many obstacles. Even though they are big or small, almost all people normally choose to ignore them or just run away. They just don't want to waste time trying to do something without seeing the result first. However, every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one’s condition. If you don't try, you'll never know what you can do. It depends on ourselves to capture that chance and take a step to change, or just skip it and no miracle happens.

Item 2 : poem
Sonnet 75 by William Shakespeare
So are you to my thoughts as food to life,
Or as sweet season’d showers are to the ground;
And for the peace of you I hold such strife
As ’twixt a miser and his wealth is found;
Now proud as an enjoyer, and anon
Doubting the filching age will steal his treasure;
Now counting best to be with you alone,
Then bettered that the world may see my pleasure;
Sometime all full with feasting on your sight
And by and by clean starved for a look;
Possessing or pursuing no delight,
Save what is had or must from you be took.
Thus do I pine and surfeit day by day,
Or gluttoning on all, or all away.

Rhetorical devices:

·         Rhyme: life- Strife, Ground – found , anon- alone, treasure- pleasure.....
·         Simile:  you to my thoughts – food to life, sweet seasoned showrs are to the ground......the peace of you – twixt a miser and his wealth is found...........
·         Metaphor : sweet season – spring
Message: The poet expresses his complete pleasure in the presence of his beloved, but says that his devotion resembles that of a miser to his money, filled with anxiety combined with pleasure in his wealth.

Item 3 Song
Firework

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?
Do you ever feel already buried deep?
Six feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you '
Cause there's a spark in you?
Chorus
(You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July
'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, oh, oh, oh
As you shoot across the sky
Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, oh, oh, oh
You're gonna leave 'em falling down )

You don't have to feel like a waste of space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow
Maybe you're reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will blow
And when it's time, you'll know
Chorus
( ......)
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon It's always been inside of you, you, you And now it's time to let it through

Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Rhetorical devices:
  • Simile : you- plastic bag/ paper thin/ house of cards
  • Rhyme: thin – in, rainbow – blow- know
·         Anaphora: do you ever feel
·         Metaphor : you – firework,
·         Irony :  hurricane ( difficulty), rainbow (success/ good thing).......
Message: we should not be afraid to express who you really are in the inside, and not letting your flaws stop you from having a great life
